CCR Physiology

A rebreather hands you control of the one variable open-circuit divers never touch directly: the partial pressure of oxygen in every breath. With that control comes responsibility — and the need to understand your own physiology.

The PO2 you breathe

On CCR you choose a setpoint — a target PO2 the unit maintains, often around 0.7 at the surface and 1.2–1.3 at depth. Too low and you risk hypoxia; too high and you risk oxygen toxicity. Monitoring and trusting (but verifying) your cells is a core CCR skill.

The four risks to manage

  • Hypoxia — too little oxygen, often during ascent or at the start of a dive; can cause sudden blackout.
  • Hyperoxia (oxygen toxicity) — too high a PO2 for too long; can trigger CNS convulsions underwater.
  • Hypercapnia — CO2 build-up from a spent or channelled scrubber; causes panic, headache and incapacitation.
  • Work of breathing — the effort of moving gas around the loop, which rises with depth and exertion.
